Collective Worship

At Kelvedon St Mary's, Collective Worship is the heartbeat of our school. It is a special time each day when we come together as a community to pause, reflect, celebrate and grow.

Rooted in our Christian vision, our worship helps us to inspire possibilities, share joy and strengthen our sense of belonging. Together we explore our values, deepen our relationships and reflect on how we can make a positive difference in the world. 

Inspired by Jesus' parable of The Great Banquet and the words of 1 Thessalonians 5:11 – "Encourage one another and build each other up" – we seek to create a community where everyone feels welcomed, valued and encouraged to flourish.

Over a two-year cycle, our worship explores all twelve Christian values from the Roots and Fruits programme, including values such as Courage, Thankfulness, Friendship, Forgiveness, Compassion and Hope. Through Bible stories, current events, inspirational stories and shared experiences, children are encouraged to reflect on how these values can shape their own lives and relationships.

Our school values of Kindness, Honesty and Respect are woven throughout every theme, helping children make meaningful connections between our Christian vision, the teachings of Jesus and everyday life.

We use the language of Windows, Mirrors and Doors to help children engage more deeply with worship:

Windows – learning from the experiences, beliefs and perspectives of others.

Mirrors – reflecting on our own thoughts, values, relationships and choices.

Doors – considering how we can respond by putting our learning into action and making a positive difference in our school, community and wider world.

This simple framework encourages children not only to listen and reflect, but also to consider how they can put their learning into action, living out our vision each day.

A Time for Everyone

As a Church of England school, our worship is distinctly Christian while warmly welcoming children and adults of all faiths and none.

Following Church of England guidance, our worship is:

Inclusive – everyone is welcomed and respected, whatever their beliefs or background.

Invitational – children are invited to join in prayer, reflection and singing, but participation is always a personal choice.

Inspiring – worship encourages us to ask big questions, think deeply and consider how we can make a positive difference in our own lives and in the lives of others.

We believe Collective Worship should be a time where every member of our community feels able to engage with integrity, whether through prayer, quiet reflection, listening or simply taking a moment to pause in the busyness of the school day.

Worship in Action

Our worship follows the Anglican pattern of Gather – Engage – Respond – Send and includes music, singing, prayer, Bible stories, stillness, reflection, silence, discussion and opportunities for children to contribute and lead. Throughout the year we celebrate the Christian festivals of Harvest, Christmas and Easter while making links to our vision and the life of our school.

Children play an active role through our Holy Council, helping to plan and lead worship, and we are grateful for our close partnership with St Mary's Church, where we celebrate key events in the Christian calendar as well as inviting members of the Church in to lead worship.  All teachers also lead worship at different points throughout the year, as well as invited guests.

Throughout the year we often reflect on the reassuring words of St Julian of Norwich: "All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well."  These words remind us to hold on to hope, even in difficult times, and encourage us to trust that we are never alone.

Each week we also gather for a Celebration Worship.  Sharing joy is a central part of our vision and this special worship gives us the opportunity to celebrate achievements, recognise acts of kindness, applaud sporting and musical successes and share children's passions and accomplishments from both inside and outside school.

Celebration Worship follows the same pattern of gathering, engaging, responding and sending, reminding us that recognising one another's gifts and encouraging each other are important acts of worship in themselves.

Time to Wonder

We recognise that every child's spiritual journey is unique.

Collective Worship provides opportunities to experience awe and wonder, ask life's big questions, celebrate moments of joy, find comfort during difficult times and reflect on what it means to live well alongside others. 

We believe that taking time to pause and reflect is an important part of growing as a learner and as a person. In the busyness of school life, Collective Worship offers a precious opportunity to slow down, think deeply and consider what really matters.

Whether through music, prayer, silence or quiet reflection, we hope every child leaves worship feeling encouraged, valued and inspired, ready to live out our vision by inspiring possibilities, sharing joy, belonging together and, above all, encouraging one another and building each other up.
