At Kelvedon St Mary's, we believe spirituality is woven through everyday life. It is not something that happens only during Collective Worship or Religious Education, but something that grows through the relationships we build, the experiences we share and the way we notice the world around us.

For us, spirituality begins with noticing.

Noticing the beauty of creation.

Noticing moments of joy.

Noticing when someone needs encouragement.

Noticing life's big questions.

Noticing ourselves, others and the world in new ways.

Rooted in our vision we believe spirituality helps us grow into compassionate, hopeful and reflective people who value one another and make a positive difference in the world.

Inspired by Jesus' parable of The Great Banquet, we recognise that spirituality also means noticing those who may feel overlooked or excluded and ensuring everyone knows they have a place. Guided by the words of 1 Thessalonians 5:11"Encourage one another and build each other up" we seek to create a community where encouragement, belonging and joyful hospitality are part of everyday life.

Spirituality Throughout School Life

We do not see spirituality as an 'add-on' or something that only happens at particular times. Instead, it is woven throughout school life.

Children encounter opportunities for spiritual growth through our curriculum, Collective Worship, outdoor learning, courageous advocacy, creative arts, play, relationships, moments of stillness and everyday conversations.

We believe that learning is not only about gaining knowledge but also about developing curiosity, imagination, compassion and hope. We encourage children to ask big questions, appreciate beauty, celebrate joy, reflect on their experiences and recognise the difference they can make to the lives of others. This understanding reflects our belief that spirituality is part of being human and is open to children and adults of all faiths and none.

Windows, Mirrors and Doors

Our shared language of Windows, Mirrors and Doors helps children engage with spirituality every day.

Windows encourage us to look outwards with curiosity and compassion, noticing both the beauty and the challenges of the world around us.

Mirrors invite us to look inwards, reflecting on our thoughts, feelings, relationships and choices.

Doors encourage us to respond by putting our learning into action through kindness, courage, justice and service to others.

This simple framework helps children move from noticing, to reflecting, to living out our vision in their everyday actions.

Time to Pause

We recognise that modern life is busy, and that everyone sometimes needs an opportunity to pause.

Rather than having a single reflection space, we encourage children to recognise that moments of stillness can happen anywhere. Every child has created their own Pause Pebble, which can be used whenever they need a moment to think, reflect, pray, regulate their emotions or simply notice the world around them. Whether in the classroom, outside, during learning or at playtime, these small moments remind us that spirituality is part of everyday life.

Alongside this, we are developing The Sanctuary - our outdoor reflection space. Designed as a calm and welcoming place for children of all faiths and none, it provides opportunities to pause, wonder, reflect and grow spiritually through nature, creativity and quiet reflection.

Sharing Joy and Wonder

We believe moments of joy are spiritually significant.

Whether it is celebrating an achievement, noticing the changing seasons, listening to music, creating artwork, sharing laughter with friends or discovering something new, these everyday moments help children develop gratitude, hope and wonder.

One piece of music that reflects our understanding of spirituality is What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong. Written during a time of uncertainty and unrest, it reminds us that even in difficult times we can choose to notice beauty, celebrate goodness and hold on to hope. This reflects our belief that spirituality is found not by ignoring life's challenges, but by recognising the goodness, compassion and possibilities that exist alongside them.

Growing Together

We hope every child leaves Kelvedon St Mary's with more than knowledge and skills.

We want them to leave with the confidence to ask questions, the courage to show compassion, the wisdom to notice wonder and the hope to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Because at Kelvedon St Mary's, spirituality is not about finding extraordinary moments.

It is about learning to notice the extraordinary within everyday life.
